Labour spokesperson on foreign affairs Duncan Smith has described the recent incursion of 19 Russian drones into Polish airspace as a serious act of aggression rather than an accident.
Speaking on Morning Mix, he said the multiple violations over time show Russia is testing boundaries and that Poland views these incursions as an existential security threat since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The TD emphasized that Europe needs to respond more forcefully by rearming, increasing deterrence and improving collective defence along its eastern borders. While Ireland has maintained neutrality, he urged the government to invest heavily in its own security—including defending its airspace, protecting its waters, safeguarding undersea cables and enhancing cyber defences. He stressed that although joining NATO or a common EU army is not being proposed, current threats mean Ireland must take pride in its own readiness and demonstrate seriousness to European partners.
