Calls for ireland to engage with the north over possible british eu exit
Sinn Fein MEP Matt Carthy is calling on the Republic of Ireland to engage with Northern Ireland on the debate surrounding a potential British exit from the EU. Mr Carthy says the implications of a Brexit would be profound for people across the whole of the Island of Ireland. Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Mr Carthy says it is imperative that people in the Republic debate the promised British referendum on EU membership with people in Northern Ireland. "This goes beyond simple green or orange issues - this is about the very future of the livelihoods of the people who live on the island of Ireland, regardless of what their political persuasion is" he said. "So I think there would be a job of work for all of us to ensure that we persuade people of all persuasions of the importance". "And I don't think that that job would necessarily be much more difficult to persuade unionists as opposed to nationalists" he added.
