The population of Ireland increased by 46 percent in the 100 years to 2011, from 3.1 to 4.6 million. Figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the Ireland of today has an older population, compared to 1911. One in ten workers was a domestic servant, half the population worked in agriculture and the rate of illiteracy was 8.3 percent. Close to ten percent of the population in 1911 was protestant, compared to 3.6 percent 100 years later. In 1911, 22 percent of homes had 10 or more rooms, while 36 percent were one room tenements. Less than a fifth of the population could speak Irish in 1911 - this had increased to two-fifths by 2011.
