Disability Rights Movement Growing in Wexford and Beyond with ILMI's Voice Project

Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI), a national cross-impairment disabled persons organisation, is making significant strides in empowering disabled communities across the southeast.

Through its Voice Project—a regional initiative funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development—ILMI has now established Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) in several counties, including Wexford and Waterford. The Wexford DPO was launched last year and has already formed a strong committee actively engaging with local stakeholders, such as Wexford County Council and housing steering groups. Their focus is on tackling key issues like social housing accessibility, transport and employment. Paula Soraghan, ILMI’s regional development worker, says the goal is to build capacity within disabled communities and ensure they are represented at decision-making tables. The next big step is the launch of the Waterford DPO, taking place in-person today at the Ardmore Suite, Tower Hotel, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is open to all—disabled people and allies alike—and will include speakers from ILMI and the local DPO committee. Looking ahead, ILMI plans to establish DPOs in Kilkenny, Carlow, Kerry and other counties. With a vision of having a DPO in every county in Ireland, ILMI aims to create a nationwide network that reflects the lived experiences of disabled people and strengthens their voice in shaping inclusive policy and community development.
