Edermine Ferry Rowing Club has been announced as the Wexford County winner of this year’s Texaco Support for Sport initiative, receiving a grant of €5,000 to purchase protective covers for its boats during the winter months.
Founded in 1973 and located along the picturesque River Slaney, the club caters to over 100 members and plays a vital role in the local community, promoting the sport of rowing to people of all ages, skill levels and abilities. Known for its friendly, inclusive environment, the club continues to foster a passion for sport and outdoor activity in the region. The Texaco Support for Sport programme, now in its fifth year, is organised by Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited, the company that markets fuel in Ireland under the Texaco brand. The initiative provides €130,000 annually, distributed as €5,000 grants to a sports club in each of Ireland’s 26 counties. Edermine Ferry Rowing Club joins the ranks of previous Wexford recipients including Kilmore United FC (2021), Menapians Athletic Club (2022), Aspire Gymnastics Academy (2023), and Naomh Éanna GAA Club (2024). “Congratulations to Edermine Ferry Rowing Club. In a sport that is thriving in Ireland, I’m delighted to help fund a basic requirement that is vital to this brilliant community-based club,” said Donncha O’Callaghan, former Irish rugby international and Texaco Support for Sport ambassador. “Well done to all – pull like dogs!” The judging process, overseen by O’Callaghan, emphasises the initiative’s commitment to supporting grassroots sport regardless of club size, popularity, or success, offering rare access to essential funding for local organisations. James Twohig, Director of Ireland Operations at Valero Energy (Ireland) Limited, praised the role of community clubs across the country: “We are proud to have distributed almost €650,000 to more than 125 sports clubs since the initiative began. The work of volunteers and club officials is the heartbeat of sport in Ireland.” Applications for the 2026 Texaco Support for Sport programme will reopen in the new year. Clubs that applied previously but were unsuccessful are encouraged to apply again. More information is available at www.TexacoSupportforSport.com.
