Education Minister Helen McEntee to Visits Wexford Schools

Fine Gael TD for Wicklow-Wexford, Brian Brennan, welcomed Minister for Education, Helen McEntee, to the constituency this week as part of a significant visit to three local schools. The Minister’s visit highlighted major strides being made in school infrastructure, student wellbeing and investment in the region’s education system.

Minister McEntee began her visit at Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir in Arklow, where she met with 6th class pupils for a lively Q&A session conducted as Gaeilge. During the visit, she confirmed that construction of the long-awaited school campus for Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir and Gaelcholáiste na Mara will begin no later than November. Deputy Brennan welcomed the update, saying: “These school communities have waited far too long for this project to get off the ground. I will continue working closely with the Minister and the school principals to see the new schools open their doors as soon as possible.” Next, Minister McEntee visited Coláiste Bhríde in Carnew, where she was greeted by principal Anna Gahan and senior students. Discussions focused on curriculum, education policy and the new 1,000-student school building project currently underway. Deputy Brennan highlighted the importance of adequate sports facilities, stating: “We must ensure the infrastructure matches the ambition of the school. I believe that ask is now firmly on the table.” Minister McEntee agreed, noting that she understands the importance of having full facilities in place and committed to working with Deputy Brennan and the school leadership to ensure progress continues. The final stop of the day was at Gorey Community School, the largest school in Ireland. Here, the Minister participated in a Wellbeing Evaluation session, engaging with students, staff, parents and the Board of Management. She announced that the school has received approval under the Summer Works Scheme for a full roof replacement and full retrofit, in addition to ongoing work on a five-classroom extension. Speaking after the visit, Deputy Brennan said: “Visits to schools always fill me with hope. The intelligence, energy and engagement of the students and the commitment of their teachers are inspiring. These investments are crucial to supporting their futures.” Minister McEntee added that the Department of Education remains committed to ensuring that modern, inclusive and high-quality learning environments are available to all students across Ireland.
