Fianna Fáil MEP for Ireland South, Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, has called for the immediate suspension of the EU’s trade association agreement with Israel in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Ní Mhurchú welcomed remarks made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her State of the Union address, in which she signalled a potential shift toward supporting sanctions against Israel and reviewing the current EU-Israel trade agreement. The MEP said this marks the first time the Commission President has publicly acknowledged concerns long held by Fianna Fáil representatives. In a statement to South East RadioNews, she cited ongoing breaches of humanitarian and international law and stated that the EU cannot continue trading freely with Israel while civilian casualties continue to mount. She confirmed plans to launch a petition later this month in the European Parliament calling for the suspension of the trade agreement. Ní Mhurchú has urged EU leaders to take immediate and decisive action [audio mp3="https://www.southeastradio.ie/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/09Cynthia.mp3"][/audio]
