Concern has been raised about the number of people who worked all their lives not being entitled to the full contributory old age pension.
In 2012 the Social Protection Minister Joan Burton changed the qualifying criteria for this pension. According to New Ross Fianna Fail County Councillor Michael Sheehan this change means that many are only entitled to a partial rate of the full €233 per week. This is due to changes made to the calculation of the number of PRSI contributions made.
