Minister says judicial inquiry into garda death 'the right thing to do'

The Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says she is setting up a judicial inquiry into the death of Sergeant Michael Galvin "in the public interest". The father of three had been investigated by the Garda Síochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) and had been cleared of wrong-going. However, he was reportedly unaware of that at the time of his death. Minister Fitzgerald says she took all the circumstances into consideration before setting up a judicial inquiry. "I felt it was the right thing to do given all of the circumstances" she said. "I felt it was in the public interest to have this type of inquiry so that the exact events can be examined; and if there are lessons to be learned that we can learn those, and if necessary look at whatever procedures were followed". "If decisions are made by the judge in relation to those, then they will inform future investigations" she added.
