Law change on bankrupts and standing for election

The government's changing the law so that people who are bankrupt can still run for the Dáil. Ministers have approved plans to lift the current ban where people who are bankrupt are disqualified from membership of the Dáil or European Parliament. It says it's trying to remove the stigma around bankruptcy following the introduction of the new insolvency laws. However the move is likely to be a boost to TDs like Mick Wallace Michael Lowry and James Reilly - each of whom have publicly acknowledged their personal financial problems.
