One and two cent coins may soon be extinct
One and two cent coins may soon be extinct, with the roll-out of a national scheme to get rid of them. A trial "rounding" scheme in Wexford town in 2013, whereby retailers rounded prices to the nearest five cent at the cash register, has been deemed a massive success. Five EU members states have already opted to get rid of the coins, which cost more to mint than they are worth. The matter is to be brought before the cabinet tomorrow.
