Road Safety Authority Targets Long-Term Learner Drivers

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is backing new government plans that will force learner drivers to take action if they haven't passed their test after seven years.

Speaking on Morning Mix, RSA spokesperson David Martin said the move aims to close a long-running loophole. “We estimate there's about 11,000 people still on learner permits after 20 years. That’s just unacceptable” he said. Under the new proposal, learners who haven’t passed their test within seven years will have to start over. This means doing the theory test and 12 mandatory lessons again. Martin also urged drivers to take extra care as the evenings get darker. “Pedestrians need to be aware. Visibility is the big thing” he said. So far this year 117 people have died on Irish roads. Four of those were in Wexford and Wicklow.
