The government's setting up an inquiry to look at claims of Garda misconduct given to the Taoiseach last week. A Senior Counsel's being appointed following a decision at this morning's Cabinet meeting. The allegations were given to Enda Kenny last week by Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin. They were given to him by the Garda whistleblower sgt maurice mc cabe The dossier alleged garda misconduct by failing to properly investigate serious crimes - including murder. Ministers decided to appoint the barrister after getting a report on the claims and hearing from the justice minister on the department's responses to sgt mc cabe. In a statement this afternoon Fianna Fáil says it expresses incredulity at the response of the coalition saying the Cabinet should have decided to hold a proper independent inquiry.
