Verona Murphy has been elected as Ceann Comhairle

Independent TD for Wexford, Verona Murphy, has been elected as Ceann Comhairle and said that she is "humbled, honoured and privileged to serve in the role".

Ms. Murphy made history as she was elected the first female Ceann Comhairle for the 34th Dáil and was applauded as she crossed the chamber floor to assume the role, with Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tanaiste Micheal Martin reaching across to shake her hand. She stated "To the people of Wexford, I want to say my office is open and normal service resumes after the Christmas holidays, and will be maintained and improved." The Ceann Comhairle is by tradition precluded from active participation in politics, but remains free to make representations on behalf of constituents. The Constitution recognises the unique role and provides for the automatic re-election of an outgoing Ceann Comhairle who wishes to be a member of the incoming Dail.
