Wexford General Hospital is now the second busiest emergency department in the country. High call volumes are putting pressure on both the hospital and the National Ambulance Service with patient numbers surpassing many larger hospitals including St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. Ambulance officer and Cllr Ger Carthy says extra measures are being taken to maintain pre-hospital care across the county. On Monday INMO figures showed Wexford General hospital had 34 Patients on Trolleys. The stats showed a big jump in numbers seen last week with 20 patients in the emergency department and 14 on wards elsewhere. The figures in Wexford are the 4th highest in the country behind Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Galway and University Hospital Limerick. Wexford General has seen fluctuating trolley figures in recent weeks, with Monday's number among the highest recorded locally in recent times. Speaking on Morning Mix Cllr Carthy says that Wexford General has some of the highest call volumes in the country and needs an additional 100 beds on top of the 97 currently under construction to keep up with increasing demand.
