Wexford has taken centre stage in Ireland’s renewable energy journey as work begins on a national map to identify ideal locations for offshore windfarms.
A south-east Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) completed last year already highlights coastal areas off Wexford and Waterford as highly suitable for offshore development. Now a national DMAP will extend this mapping process to the full 450000 square kilometres of Irish waters aiming for completion by the end of 2027. Consultations with Wexford’s fishing tourism and environmental communities are expected early next year with public engagement to follow. The move is part of a government shift to more structured planning requiring future windfarm projects to locate within designated areas rather than developer-chosen sites. Minister for Marine Timmy Dooley says the plan is crucial to meeting Ireland’s clean energy targets and building investor confidence as the country pushes toward generating 37GW of offshore wind power by 2050.
